Small Ships

Small Ships are a delightful way to see the United States, as well as being able to get into small islands and European countries.  Very relaxed atmosphere, very port intensive.  Some ships are equipped to only take 50 passengers while others can take hundreds!

We offer the guests the opportunity to go where the big ships cannot. Our niche is exploring some of America's most historic waterways in a style reminicent of private yacht vacations of a bygone era.

With many itineraries to choose from each year, passengers keep coming back to repeat the ACCL experience. Our ships are purposefully simple, comfortable with an informal atmosphere evident in our BYOB policy and relaxed dress code. Our itineraries are specially tailored to the active, inquisitive and eco-conscious audience. We choose our crew, chefs, lecturers and land tours carefully to provide a top-notch vacation. Often we offer local guides and entertainment to ensure an authentic experience of the regions we befriend.

Family operated for over 40 years American Canadian Caribbean Line of Warren, Rhode Island is the brainchild of shipbuilder, Capt. Luther H. Blount (1916-2006). In the 1950's, in order to experience a small ship cruise on the historic Northeastern waterways, you had to own your own yacht or have a friend who did. Luther Blount owned such a yacht and invited many friends to join him and his young family. It evolved into a business as guests started to multiply, requesting to contribute to the cost and to bring friends of their own. What started first as family swordfishing vacations to New England and the Canadian Maritimes has developed into one of the most renowned niche cruise companies that has defined the industry.

With Blount’s shipbuilding background and love of boating, he combined the knowledge of a seasoned yachtsman with the engineering skills of a naval architect to construct a vessel that would be able to navigate shallow coastal waters and under the low bridges of the Erie Canal. He developed a retractable pilot house that lowers into the second deck to allow passage under these low bridges or low-hanging brush found along tropical rivers. The shallow draft feature allows for cruising in shallow depths and landing on sandy beaches. The Blount bow ramp allows ship to shore access without a dock or tendering.

"My family and I are honored to continue my father's vision."

Nancy Blount, ACCL President

"Small Ship Cruising Done Perfectly"

American Cruise Lines provides passengers a unique style of cruising along the magnificent east coast of the Unites States from Maine to Florida. With no more than 100 guests, passengers are able to enjoy each port of call, up close and personal, all while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow passengers and the exemplary, personal attention that is the hallmark of American Cruise Lines.

To enhance your cruise experience, we invite carefully selected enlighteners, naturalists, historians, and other experts to join us onboard. During informal lectures, open discussions and activities, they bring the local history, nature and culture alive with their knowledge and passion for American heritage. They also lead shore excursions, giving guests behind-the-scenes tours of some of America's best-kept secrets and favorite treasures.

Evening activities and entertainment onboard are just as unique as the ports we visit, and include lectures, guest musicians from the local towns, demonstrations, minor theatrical performances and games. Each activity is rich in history and culture, and is designed to highlight the areas we visit. You'll find the absence of casinos, glitzy shows and discos to be much appreciated. The library and numerous lounges found on each vessel are ideal for curling up with a good book, and the observation decks serve as perfect vista points for the passing scenery and wildlife.

The dining experience with American Cruise Lines is a very special one. Each ship has a spacious dining salon that seats all passengers at one time. Our highly skilled chefs trained at the some of the most prestigious Culinary Institutes prepare each meal to order with the utmost care and quality. There are a variety of choices at every meal that frequently include a specialty dish highlighting flavors from the local region. The young, all-American dining room staff is always friendly and accommodating, and eager to pamper you, making sure that your dining experience is just the way you like it.

Small ship cruising with American Cruise Lines is not like cruising on a mega-ship for days on the open sea. Small ships, like the American Cruise Lines' Vessels, provide a more remarkable adventure, enabling no more than 100 passengers to experience personally and intimately, a multitude of fascinating destinations unreachable by larger, conventional cruise ships. American Cruise Lines' vessels are perfectly designed for inner explorations of off-the-beaten-track waterways and charming ports that passengers on large ships will never see.

Shared adventures and camaraderie are savored onboard and during escorted shore excursions. This unique experience is further enriched through onboard lecturers and naturalists, and special visits from local experts. Small ship cruising offers travelers a relaxing, intimate atmosphere, casual ambiance, an unrivaled cultural experience, and the opportunity to be part of an educational, historic adventure along the natural splendor and smooth inland waters of the East Coast.

Our Legacy of Exploration
Cruise West founder Chuck West established his first tour service in Fairbanks in 1946. He went on to pioneer nearly every element of today’s Alaska travel scene.

Chuck West’s wife and lifetime companion, Marguerite, has links with Alaska that go back a century. Her parents owned gold dredges in Nome – and she herself was Miss Alaska in 1937.

Over 50 years of Experience in Travel Sharing Nature’s Wonders
As a young bush plane pilot in Alaska in 1946, Cruise West founder Chuck West was convinced that Alaska’s natural wonders deserved to be shared with a wider world. Through the decades since, Chuck pioneered the first motorcoach line – the first chain of hotels – the first modern small-ship cruises in Alaska. Cruise West has continued to seek out new routes, and new ways to explore, ranging ever farther throughout the West. Today, Cruise West is North America’s leading small-ship cruise line, with unique routes from Alaska and British Columbia to Costa Rica and Panama.

Our Routes Are Tailored for You
